John Wealthy was an artist, educator and campaigner. He trained at Wimbledon School of Art in the 1950s. His early work was figurative and writing about his work from this period Mike Bradshaw noted - ‘There are also a few narrative paintings from this time, where one can see the influence of Edward Burra and Stanley Spencer. These wonderful, dynamic uses of the figure dominate the compositions, with muted colour and pattern like qualities, which was very much of its time.’
Wealthy's work became more abstract and he developed an interest in collage and assemblages using found objects on the shore near his home in Stolford, West Somerset.
