Provenance
Galerie Druet, Paris. Alfred Pacquement, Paris, by 1913, until at least 1924. Private collection, Europe. Claire Denis and Fabienne Stahl will include this work in their forthcoming Maurice Denis catalogue raisonné.
Note: Situated at the heart of Paris, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées is celebrated as the first example of Art Déco architecture in the city; alongside leading artists of the age who contributed to its decoration such as Édouard Vuillard and Émile-Antoine Bourdelle, Maurice Denis was charged with the design of the central dome as well as two bas-relief panels. The present drawing is a study for this innovative decorative programme.
