Note: This rare early drawing relates closely to the African 'Fang' mask that Derain famously bought from Vlaminck. It is well recorded that Derain was 'speechless' and 'stunned' when he first saw it and then in turn he showed the mask to Matisse and Picasso who were also greatly impressioned. It proved to be one of the key moments that affected the course of modern painting.
