Note: Portrait painter, watercolourist, printmaker and muralist; born in Fifeshire, Scotland and emigrated with his family at the age of three to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; studied at the Ontario School of Art, 1879-1880, in Rome, 1880-81 and at the Académie Julian, Paris, 1881-4; returned to Canada 1885-7 and from 1887 travelled, later based in Glasgow and settled in London, 1900; founding member of the Senefield Club, 1908, and a member of the Canadian Art Club, 1912-15; designed posters for the Underground Group. 1913-15; served in WWI and later commissioned to paint murals for the Canadian War Record. His work is in the London Transport Museum, National Portrait Museum, Ferens Art Gallery, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Scottish National Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery.
