Note: One of a series of drawings made by Derain for the Ballets Russes in c. 1927. Writing to Vanessa Bell in 1919 Roger Fry remarked, ‘Derain is here and will be for some weeks. He’s perfectly charming and not at all “the great man”… He’s tremendously encouraging about my work, which he really seems to like a good deal.’
