Provenance
Collection of Roger Fry; by descent
Note: George Hume Barne was born in Bristol but was living in Paris by 1917. He is recorded as exhibiting at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1921 and became a member of the London Group in 1922. His work was included in the London Artists' Association Exhibition in 1929. In a letter to Sadler dated 26 August 1917, Roger Fry congratulates him on his recent purchases, and comments: ... "Barne is very good. He lives in Paris and works with intense deliberation taking about 3 months over a single still life. He's now in Gallipoli poor man."
The label verso of the present work reveals that Fry exhibited Barne's work at the Omega Workshops. An example of his work can also be found at Charleston House.
