A conscientious objector in World War II he worked on the land and developed his landscape painting. In 1946 he joined the staff at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and eventually became Head at the Fine Art Department. He exhibited at Wakefield Art Gallery in the important Euston Road School exhibition of 1948 and also showed at the Royal Academy, London Group, and New English Art Club.
