Note: It was on Vanessa Bell’s advice that Hepworth began a series of flower paintings during the early 1930s. Dorothy’s partner, Patricia Preece, was concerned about their lack of commercial success and sought Bell’s advice about compositions that might prove better sellers. Writing about Hepworth, Vanessa Bell commented in a letter to Keith Baynes, ‘I feel even if her work happens to be unsympathetic in many ways, still she is the sort of artist we ought to support. She is gifted and very serious and needs encouragement badly.’
