Note: About to Begin was completed on the 4th of January 1950, four weeks before his London Gallery exhibition, at the invitation of ELT Mesens and Roland Penrose. The exhibition, flatteringly shared with the great European Master Joan Miró, was received with much acclaim but resulted in few sales. This period however in Morris's work marks a development towards a more mature and calligraphic personal style, breaking from an earlier incorporation of cubism. 1950 also marks the end of the London Gallery and to a great extent the demise of Surrealism's exposure in Britain. This is a rare example of Morris's early work and it should be noted that Morris merited About to Begin strongly enough for it to be included in his 1952 exhibition at The Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Cat.54).
