We are delighted to be offering a small private collection of early St. Ives paintings including works by Julius Olsson, Frederick Milner and Guy Kortright - all founder members of the St. Ives Arts Club in 189o. Other artists included are John Anthony Park, Louis Grier, Richard Hayley Lever, Robert Borlase Smart and Louis Sargent. Following Whistler's stay in St. Ives during the winter of 1882/3, a number of younger artists were attracted to St. Ives to study land and seascape painting. They shared an interest in the innate aesthetic qualities of oil paint, tone and colour balance and the abstract possibilities in the land, sea and sky. They should be valued for anticipating the post-war St. Ives abstract movement that was to achieve international prominence.
