Note: White stood by his pacifist convictions during WW1 vowing ‘never to raise my hand against living things’. Registered as a conscientious objector he was sent to work on the land in Devon. The present painting is his self portrait as a farm labourer or perhaps symbolically ‘Self Portrait of the Artist as Conscientious Objector’.
