Influenced by the European modern movement, Ethelbert White was one of the most distinctive English landscape painters of the 1920s and 30s. Fundamental to his artistic position during this period were the book illustrations and independent prints he produced in wood engraving. Aesthetically he remained close to Paul and John Nash and with them he was an active member of the London Group throughout the inter war period.
The man himself was a legend in his own lifetime. The naive, rustic charm and simple gaiety of his art reinforced his image as an artist who led a bohemian life, travelling the country in a gypsy caravan with his wife Betty.
We are delighted to be cataloguing the Ethelbert White family collection and archive which will culminate in a new and important publication about the artist's life and work. A selling exhibition drawn from the collection of the artist's family will include paintings, watercolours and wood engravings from all periods of White's life.
We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who has works or information about White's life and work . Email - denys@courtgallery.com.
